Male pattern baldness is caused by DHT (dihydrotestosterone). All people have DHT but only some will suffer from hair loss, because of a genetic predisposition for hair follicles with an overabundance of androgen receptors to which DHT attaches. Over time, DHT causes a gradual miniaturization and finally the death of these susceptible hair follicles. This action is largely inherited. Although hair loss drugs may slow or halt hair loss, they are really only effective at regrowing hair in the crown.
Hair loss in women does not have as clear a cause as male pattern baldness. Women with hair loss often suffer from diffuse thinning all over the scalp rather than in a distinct pattern. This hair thinning is sometimes temporary and can be caused by a variety of factors tied to the actions of hormones, including: thyroid conditions, pregnancy, and menopause. Where illness or underlying hormonal conditions are not the cause, DHT acting on an overabundance of androgen receptors in hair follicles, also appears to be the culprit in thinning and hair loss in women. Female hormones are thought to influence the time of onset, severity, and pattern of loss experienced by women.

Are you a good hair transplant candidate? We are often asked this question, and all patients must undergo a hair transplant consultation to ultimately determine their candidacy for hair restoration surgery. In general, though, a good hair transplant candidate has good donor density (a good supply of hair in the donor area), good donor laxity, good ratio of donor supply to recipient demand (i.e. enough grafts to cover the targeted area of hair loss), and realistic expectations.
A hair transplant procedure can take anywhere from 8 - 14 hours depending upon the size of the number of grafts and the complexity of the transplant.
For the average patient, grafts will begin growing noticeably between 3 and 4 months post-op. The most significant growth will be seen between 6 and 8 months and growth will continue for up to one year post-op before you see the final results. See the hair transplant growth timeline.
